Check out the drummer in this. Normally when you hit a cymbal with a drumstick it moves a bit more than when it just gets hit with a breeze.
Notice none of them went to check on him. I think the guitar player on the left looked at the second one in and said something like, "Should we go help him?". . ."No, if we do that then they will know were aren't playing either."

I think you're right about Ashlee, the band was playing but the vocals were pre-recorded and someone in the booth muffed it.
