Scary Poppins, Happy Shining and Gay Harry Potter?!

September 30th 2008 10:56
Amazing how a little bit of editing, a change in music and a spiel from 'voice over guy' can completely change the meaning of a film preview clip. Kiddy hijinks to horror, horror to romantic comedy and the there is Harry Potter...

Well Scary Poppins was rather amusing - I think you should read the book - Disney made her a very sugary creature - the original is more in keeping with your take.

Harry Potter and the Brokeback Goblet?? Do you realise there's been a multitude of gay Potter stories on the web since circa Potter Day One??

Not that this point makes your film any less amusing - just soooo real really..

Hi David, yes the homoerotic Potter has always been there, I just loved the way they edited that clip, it really just looked like an ad for a gay love story.

I haven't read Mary Poppins, now I'm intrigued!

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks Morgan, how funny is it that you can change the context of something so entirely and so easily?

I put on a post about and with the Mary Poppins one some time ago, I, too, found it very amusing and skilfully presented.

Hi Katyzzz. It's great isn't it? I love how inspiring some people's creativity is. I would never had looked at Mary Poppins and thought of a scary thriller.

Thanks for the comment.

Yes, well you are right - it was well edited - and there was a slightly menage e tois (3 way) feeling emerging between the three males.. etc.. and yes, there are quite a list of Mary Poppins books (written by an Australian woman no less!) and Mary is quite the Nanny McPhee most of the time, quite plain and bullying people around for all it's worth.. maybe not quite up there with Stephen King, but easily close

Love it! The Mary edit made it look creepy. And I loved the Shining but this edits just turns it around!

Hi Cass, I want to go on a hunt now for things that can be completely transformed. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the comment

I took a compilation of scenes from Aliens (James Cameron), with the Big Female Alien in pursuit of Ripley, once in an editing exercise and placed the opening credits music from Gentlemen Prefer Blonde's (Howard Hawks..?) under it - made me laugh..

also a loop of Marylin's "No no no no" intro to 'Diamonds are a girls best friend"... I put that under the shower scene from 'Psycho' (Hitchcock) and that was very strange - kind of funny but very dark..

One thing I've always thought is, scenes from 'Ghost' with Demi and Patrick trying to communicate - with Kylie Minogue "Can't get you out of my head" would work quite well - not quite the soppy feeling, a little more up beat than the film actually is..

Here's one:
1)Turn Intolerable Cruelty into an intense murder mystery or whatever you want.

2) Turn Bruce Almighty into a fantasy flick (not sure if there are enough god-ish footages though)

3) Pulp Fiction into a musical

David, they all sound very cool. Now I want some editing software. God, I'd never leave the house!

Hi Cass, Pulp Fiction as a musical hahahahaha. They could do a whole number on Cheese Royale!
